(hereafter abbreviated as TJHSST) is consistently regarded as among the top high schools in the country, public or private. It is a public magnet school in Fairfax county Virginia, and has a well-deserved reputation for academic rigor and excellence.

In this article then, we鈥檙e going to explore the school and its offerings in more detail. We will begin with the general facts and information about TJHSST, followed by their process for admissions (and what you need to do to apply). We鈥檒l finish off by examining their offerings in more depth, and highlighting notable classes and campus programs. Let鈥檚 jump in!

TJHSST Basic Facts

The school was originally opened in 1964, but in 1985 was converted into a selective admissions magnet school, with a focus on STEM specifically. The governor helped to create the school as a regional school for technology, and the school therefore serves students from Fairfax, Arlington, Loudon, and Prince William counties, and from the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church.

The school has consistently been ranked highly academically, with ranking it the top high school in the country in 2021 and 2022. The school enrolls 1,800 students, and has an 18-1 student to teacher ratio, far better than the national average. The school has the following demographic breakdown:

  • Asian 72%
  • White 18.3%
  • Two or more races 4.8%
  • Hispanic 3%
  • Black 1.8%

Additionally, the student body is 59% male and 41% female.

The school鈥檚 curriculum is focused on preparing students for college, and on introducing them to advanced topics in the sciences and technology. The school boasts a 100% graduation rate, and many of the students go on to attend the nation鈥檚 top universities.

While TJHSST is a public school and receives much of its funding from taxes, it is also supported by a number of community groups and local businesses, who see the school as an ideal way to reinvest in their community.

We should note that there is an ongoing court case regarding TJHSST鈥檚 admissions policies, . This case is still on hold, and the decision could dramatically alter the school鈥檚 admissions policies. We will describe the admissions policies as they currently stand, and then return to update this article should the situation change.

In order to apply, you must reside in one of the geographic areas served by the school, there is no way for students from outside this area to apply. In addition, students must meet the following prerequisites in order to apply:

  • They must be in Algebra 1 or higher for math
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5

The application requires you to complete a math or science problem solving essay, an application sheet which demonstrates your skills and character, and details about your socio-economic background.

Each public middle school in the region served by TJHSST is automatically able to send 1.5% of its class to the high school. All of the other seats available are given to the highest evaluated students. During evaluations, students are only referred to by a number; admissions officers do not know your name, gender, or ethnicity.

Prior to 2020, the admissions process also included the results of a math, science, and reading exam. This was changed to increase the diversity on campus, and the lawsuit currently pending is seeking to revert to the former admissions status quo. We will see if and when the court issues a verdict on the ruling; the lower court may be waiting to see how the Supreme Court rules on affirmative action.

Notable Options at TJHSST

There are numerous notable options at this school, both inside and outside the classroom, as one would expect from the top high school in the country. We will go through these by section, for ease of finding what you are interested in.

Classes and Curricula

As a technology focused high school, there are numerous high level course offerings available to students. First, here are the to graduate:

  • 4 years of English

  • 3 years of laboratory science
  • 3 years of history and social studies (including courses on US and Virginian history, and US and Virginian government)

The school offers not just lab sciences, but hands-on technical classes where you may learn the applications of the principles of physics and chemistry. These include automotives, construction, cosmetology, carpentry, electrical construction, and HVAC. This is on top of more formal engineering courses.

Students interested in business can find classes in marketing, entrepreneurship, and management, economics, and introductions to ethical leadership and law, both fields prized by business students.

Students interested in medicine can take practical courses in nursing and healthcare, along with more specialized courses in dental medicine, pharmacy, emergency medicine, physical therapy, or veterinary science. These are all offered at multiple levels, from absolute beginner to master. AP options are offered in each language which contains one.

Research Options

All students are required to undertake a research mentorship or technical apprenticeship while at the school, so TJHSST has a number of well equipped laboratories and mentorships designed to help students pursue their research. This is presented each year at the Thomas Jefferson Symposium to Advance Research, and students may choose to publish their results in a journal produced by the school which is widely regarded for its quality.

The allows students to pursue these interests even further outside of school, partnering them with a researcher or academic from the surrounding area (which includes Washington DC). You are still monitored by and report to the school鈥檚 research director, but have more of an opportunity to apply your skills and explore your interests in the real world.

Extracurriculars

On top of having a swath of extracurriculars, students at TJHSST are given an 鈥溾 at the end of the school day on Wednesdays and Fridays specifically to participate in extracurricular activities.

Clubs run the gamut, from offerings you find at any high school to those which can only exist due to the advanced lab facilities that this school boasts. They are not just limited to science and technology either; students can participate in artistic endeavors, explore their various hobbies, or participate in .

While the focus of the school is academics, students still find time outside of class to pursue their passions. They have seen success here as well, with their academic teams often recognized for their talent.

Below is my son's review. He was accepted to his dream Ivy League school!

From an admitted student's perspective, I am incredibly grateful to have met Sasha - he has been instrumental in helping me achieve my educational dreams (Ivy League), all while being an absolute joy (he's a walking encyclopedia, only funnier!) to work with.

Many people are dissuaded from seeking a college counselor because they think they can get into their desired college(s) either way. Honestly, going that route is a bit short-sighted and can jeopardize your odds of acceptances after years of hard work. The sad truth is, the American education system (even if you attend a fancy private school and ESPECIALLY if you go to a public school) doesn't really tell students how to write a compelling and authentic application. Going into the admissions process alone, without speaking with an advisor, is like going to court without a lawyer - you put yourself at a significant disadvantage because you don't have all the facts in front of you, or the help you need to negotiate the system.

That said, you need a good lawyer just like you need a good college counselor. And that's where Sasha distinguishes himself from the crowd of people claiming they'll get you into Harvard. I came to Sasha worried about and frankly dumbfounded by the college admissions process. I was unsure what to write about and how to go about drafting the essay that perfectly captured my passion, interests, and self. And I was highly skeptical that anyone could really help me. But, damn, did Sasha prove me wrong. From the beginning, Sasha amazed me with his understanding of the process, and ability to lend clarity and direction to me when I desperate needed it. After interviewing me about my background, experiences, activities, outlook, and vision, he helped me see qualities about myself I had not previously considered 'unique' or 'stand-out.' This process of understanding myself was so incredibly important in laying the groundwork for the essays I eventually wrote, and I'm certain I would've drafted boring, inauthentic essays without it.

Looking back, Sasha's talent is that he can see where your strengths lie, even when you don't see them. The truth is, although we don't always realize it, everyone has a unique story to tell. Sasha helped me see mine, and with his big-picture insight I was able to write the application that truly encapsulated my life and vision. He inspired me to dig deeper and write better, challenging me to revise and revise until my essays were the most passionate and authentic work I had ever written. As clich茅d as that sounds, that's really what universities are looking for. In retrospect, it makes sense - in the real world passionate (not simply intelligent) individuals are the ones who make a difference in the world, and those are the individuals colleges would like to have associated with their brand.

In the end, I was accepted to the college of my dreams, a feat I could not have achieved without the direction Sasha lent to me. Essays (and the personal narrative you develop through your application) matter so much, and can literally make or break your application. I have seen so many of my 'qualified' friends receive rejections because they wrote contrived essays that didn't truly represent who they were; conversely, I have also seen so many friends with shorter resumes accepted because they were able to articulate their story in a genuinely passionate and authentic way - I fall into the latter category.

As a former admissions officer at Johns Hopkins, Sasha knows what types of essays jibe well with universities, an invaluable asset to have in the admissions process. He is responsive, flexible, creative, positive, and witty. For anyone who is serious about going into the college admissions process informed and prepared, I highly recommend Sasha.

I used 日本av片 to mainly help me with college applications. Within weeks of using this service, Sasha was able to simplify the already complex process. When it came to writing the Common App essay, Sasha didn鈥檛 just help with grammar and syntax, he brought my essays to life. Sasha also worked tirelessly to help solidify my extracurricular activities, including research and internship opportunities. Without his help, I would have never had an impressive resume.

Sasha is not only an extremely knowledgeable tutor, but also a genuine brother figure. His guidance, throughout my last two years of high school, was everything I needed to get me an acceptance letter from my dream schools (UC Berkeley, Tufts, Emory).

When it came to testing, 日本av片 worked like a charm. Sasha offered a very comprehensive plan when it came to completely acing my standardized tests. Without his test taking strategies I would have never gotten straight 5s on my AP tests and a 35 on the ACT.

Working with Sasha, I didn鈥檛 just become a good student, I became a genuine scholar.

We worked with 日本av片 during my son's senior year. I was concerned that we may be too late to take advantage of college advising but the 日本av片 team quickly and confidently directed us through the steps to ensure no deadlines were missed. Sasha's knowledge about schools, what they looked for in candidates, and how to maneuver the application process was invaluable. Mateo and Ryan worked with my son to help him create an essay that would get noticed and I am so appreciative he had their guidance.

Prior to securing 日本av片, we tried using a less-expensive online service which was a terrible experience. As a parent, 日本av片 brought peace of mind to an area that was frankly overwhelming. This service was invaluable in the knowledge that we gained throughout the process. He has also met with my freshman daughter to provide guidance for her high school courses, career paths, extracurricular activities, and more.

Prior to signing with 日本av片, I tried a less expensive online service and was very disappointed.

As a result of our work with 日本av片, I am pleased to say that my son will be attending Stern Business School at New York University this fall! I highly recommend 日本av片. Highly recommend!
